Bernie joined UBC as a Consultant in May 2024 and brings a diversified background in higher education administration at both public and private institutions. He comes to George Mason from American University where he managed AU’s COVID Response, supported Student Thriving and Retention initiatives, co-led Student Affairs Communications, managed the University Student Awards program, and served as the institutional lead for the AU Votes Program, a campus-wide Civic Engagement Initiative. Bernie has served in senior Student Affairs roles where he managed a portfolio of departments as well as led the assessment, strategic planning, technology, marketing, and communication functions for the Division of Student Affairs. This broad and diverse background afforded him the opportunity to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students from throughout the institution to discover and develop best practices that increase the institution’s efficiency while at the same time enhance the student experience. His responsibilities have also included Student Affairs and University policy development, crisis response, co-leading the Departmental Program Review process for the Division of Student Affairs, oversight of University Commencement, and service on University Strategic Planning, Policy, and Risk Management Committees. In addition to his administrative roles, Bernie is also a Professorial Lecturer at George Washington University where he teaches in the Higher Education Administration doctoral program in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
Bernie earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Radford University, a Master of Education in Student Personnel Services from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Public Administration from The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University. In his free time, Bernie enjoys cooking, golf, tennis, biking, travel, and spending time with family, friends, and his two Bichons Bentley and Winston.
